in leadership - a strategic decision

How will the year 2009 look? How will the strategic priorities of companies and employee work style be affected by the financial crisis and the problems that loom on the horizon? These are questions which will be answered in the near future:
Whether we like it or not, difficult periods have a negative impact among employees. A series of profound transformations, which diminish morale and motivation, no matter the position, rank or statute. The degree to which the effects stated below manifest themselves is directly proportional to how fragile trust, morale and motivation were before this started:
• Individuals become unsure about themselves and their capacity to deliver the results that are expected from them
• They feel they don’t have enough resources or the
support they think they need
• They spend more time thinking about what they can lose, as opposed to what they could accomplish
• They feel alone, without any help, "on their own" even if others are going
through the same difficult moments
• They rationalize their energy and don’t see difficulties
as challenges through which they can enhance their abilities, but as major obstacles
that are impossible to pass
• Positive results aren’t noticed anymore
In such a context, a focus on quality leadership in top and front line management becomes a strategic priority. This is necessary in order to maintain a high degree of trust among employees and stop any attempts of abandoning ship within the ranks of valuable people at every level. Their look-out or departure can severely deteriorate the climate within a company. The above mentioned effects, if they aren’t controlled and dealt with, will impact the company’s performance in terms of processes and interworking therefore resulting in a decrease of management credibility and financial performance.
The following year is the perfect moment to show the importance of leadership in the life, culture and strategy of a company. It’s a time when the upper management has to strengthen and clearly communicate their believes in an optimistic and courageous manner. Retaining the most valuable individuals and also the unity of the teams are crucial. The loyalty and support that managers manifest towards their teams is vital, in order for the company to get the same kind of treatment from its employees.
The basic principle of leadership is continuous learning: transform lessons into values, practices and processes! A difficult period must not annul the basic principles, but strengthen them. This difficult period we are facing will test and lay bare to one of the most hidden, profound and intangible area of an organization: the values, principles and priorities that govern them!
