| Can you spare 3 minutes? |
|
 |
The other two articles were about the philosophy behind the new Time Management course, this one is a short presentation of a few of its chapters. It will only take 3 minutes.
It’s a lesson in establishing your objectives and even more, reaching them. I tried, at a larger scale, to replicate a healthy habit promoted by Harold Taylor: a to-do list will remain a simple piece of paper as long as it doesn’t have an exact copy in your personal agenda.
If we decide it’s high time to change a habit we’re going to realize it’s not very easy to do so – even if, from a logical perspective, you know it was going to happen!
How can you say if a habit is good or bad?
Productive or profitless? If the only thing
we have to take into consideration is our
brain’s opinion, then there is no difference
- it’s just the way it works and that’s it.
The only difference is if it makes us feel
good or bad. When it comes to postponing,
for example, some of us have become so good
at delaying things we should be doing that
we end up spending more time planning them
then actually doing them.
We all do it. Most of us feel guilty when we do it. But still we continue to do it anyway. Everybody postpones things! Don’t tell me that isn’t true, I don’t believe you…
From a business perspective, postponing is profitable – for other people though! Suppliers you put to work at the last minute, tourism agencies that find your dream vacation spot a week before you’re holiday, co-workers you become indebted to – these are just a few of the examples.
It’s a simple step from project status to action status, but you need a few basic abilities to help you through this hurdle. Balance is one of them.
And I am not just talking about the ever present work life balance. It’s been debated, known about and praised. Much more than that, the balance present in the 8-10 hours you spend at work is equally important – in the end it makes up a large part of your day. Do you remember when your parents didn’t find anything in the mailbox for days? How about the times when you only had 3 channels on your TV to choose from (Romanian, Serb or Bulgarian)? If you’re too young and you can’t believe it, try asking your parents and grandparents.
Practice taught me that no matter the task you only have four types of decisions:
• You do it now
• You reschedule it (remember to set
a deadline)
• You delegate it
• You refuse it
It’s the same thing you do with your clothes at the beginning of every season, once you take them out of the closet. The first ones you place – very carefully- on the coat hanger are the ones you know you’ll be wearing the next day. You look at the ones you haven’t picked and you choose to put them away in case the weather decides to change. This exercise, beside the positive effect it has on your closet, helps you see what you need and what you can throw away. At this point, it’s up to us to decide what we’re going to do with the clothes we don’t need: you give them away or you just throw them away.
It’s important to know what season you’re preparing for. After that the choice is pretty easy. Knowing what you’re working for is equally important. Once this is established (it’s not easy!), you will find that making day to day decisions isn’t that hard… whether they are related to your workplace or your personal life.
Priorities Matter! ® is built
around an original model created as a result
of my day to day experiences and those of
the people around me. It’s a simple and practical
model developed during trainings with hundreds
of participants looking for a solution regarding
personal efficiency.
5 easy steps you can always turn to when you
feel your "closet" is packed. Or
the "season" has changed. A personal
5 step instrument that shows you the direction
and the way in which you can separate the
important things from everything else.
A model
that will help you find the right answer to
just about any situation.
I created a course
suitable for the environment we live in today.
