FROM OUR EXPERIENCE
Why "Priorities Matter"!
Introduction: "Don't make the mistake of considering the trainer as being some sort of a fairy! Sure, he might look good in a tutu, holding a wand but he's not a miracle worker! Worst case scenario, you can turn him into a witch...if you don't like him!"

Individual leadership course. Survival course. Personal efficiency course.
I have spent more than two months put together in the training room. Subject: time management. Add ten more years of experience delivering this training for Human Invest. Audience: from new employees all the way to experienced managers. Young people in majority. On the fun side after two days of training a 53 year old manager said:
"Now I realize why my plum brandy didn't turn out how I expected. I got tied up with other things and forgot about my plums and now I'm sorry. This year they are one of my priorities and they're going to be on my agenda!"
v The nice thing about this type of course is that it's dependent on common sense and therefore it should be learned at an early age. And because nobody teaches this in either school or college, the first years of your career seem to be the most appropriate.

The good manners you learn at home, in time, turn into habits when they are sustained and educated. What you need to remember from the statement above is: habits that are sustained and educated.

Situation: as a child, you spend your summers with your grandparents and they teach you that you mustn't talk while you're eating, that you don't keep your elbows on the table and you don't slurp when you're eating soup.

They've told you so many times that it's starting to embed itself in your personality and you're just about to develop a set of manners. You come back home, your parent's come late from work, tired and worried or maybe just drained of energy. It's dinner time. The table is set. The sound of dishes, endless talks, sounds of soup being slurped with every spoonful you take, elbows on the table. What do you get?

There are a few positive cases in which, when you come home, your colleagues and manager are going to encourage you to apply those good manners that you want to learn: a clear illustration of objectives, discipline in executing them, your capacity to discern between priorities and simple emergencies or just a plain healthy attitude towards your responsibilities.

And what if it doesn't happen? A child will definitely tell his parents that they aren't doing the right thing: "Daddy, daddy, grandpa told me that...". But they are too tired. And they don't pay attention.
The father may mumble something along the lines of " We should send him to his grandparents more often."

The difference between a child and an adult is the capacity do discern. This can make you linger in doing something that can become part of who you are, once you're convinced it's good. Educating clients, suppliers, colleagues even your manager is part of the strategies of a healthy time management. In the next article we'll see what lies beneath the concept of "Priorities Matter".
