Madi is an example of perseverance and professionalism for us: always passionate about involving herself in unconventional and difficult projects, straight to the point when the situation demands it, but friendly towards other people. She is the kind of colleague, friend, consultant or partner that anybody would want!
Human Invest: You were one of the pioneers in the Romanian training industry, you have a broad experience outside the country and now you founded MMM Consulting! Where did you have the energy and why start from scratch as an entrepreneur?
Madi Radulescu: "Now" actually means "5 years ago"...it has been a long time, a lot of projects... I always had the entrepreneurial spirit, let’s not forget that in 1993 I left a very good career in order to create, with a couple other colleagues, what is today CODECS. The energy comes from the passion I have for what I am doing, I learned and worked with passion, I like people, I like to communicate. In 2003 I decided to do something on my own. I had projects all over South-Eastern Europe, I worked alone for more than a year and then I started creating my team.
Human Invest: During the course of your projects and activities you, without a doubt, met a great deal of special people: who influenced you the most and why?
Madi Radulescu: My father would definitely be first on my list: throughout the course of my life he always told me the same thing, every time I looked to him for advice: "you can do it on your own". This mattered a lot in time. Secondly I would mention professor Alexandru Popovici, with whom I worked a lot in later years. He was my first professional mentor and he had a lot of trust in me since the start. He always had a saying: "Those who have wings to fly, do so!" and this helped me...
Human Invest: Today’s companies have a stringent need to ensure a great level of maturity for their young managers in a short period of time! What path should they choose in order to achieve this?
Madi Radulescu: Involve them in projects, show them what "lies behind a decision", and teach them the business logic. From my experience the "logic of actions" is missing in a lot of cases, there is a lack in understanding "the next step", something like "if I do this...it will lead to that, if I don’t then the consequences are...". In a lot of situations work is done without really understanding what it’s about. You can’t develop as a leader if you don’t understand the consequences of your actions. This, in my opinion, is the starting point. On the other hand, training plays a vital role, it provides structure to your approaches, it creates a common language, and it shortens your learning curve and the amount of time necessary for the process of integration.
Human Invest: Employees are increasingly frequent showing enthusiasm when they leave the office, rather when they arrive! What steps should we take in order to create the same enthusiasm when they come to work?
Madi Radulescu: The essential element is the relationship with your manager. It’s at the base of organizational climate and also the reason for which people decide whether to stay with the company or not. Secondly employees must have a perspective of the way they want to develop: during the job interview very few people are asked, especially the young ones: "What is it you want to do with your life?"
What are your plans, where do you see yourself in 5 years, not in a year? The fact that most young people nowadays go through two or three colleges doesn’t necessarily imply a more solid education but lack of focus. They are trying to do a lot of things at the same time and this generates a great deal of frustration in the long run, when it comes to understanding what operational activity really means.
Human Invest: How do you see MMM Consulting develop in the next 2-3 years, what are your dreams and ambitions?
Madi Radulescu: In the next two-three years... we’ll be a medium company (it’s not the number of consultants that matters, it’s what they do) but we’re looking towards a number of 10-12 consultants, a stable team, capable of developing its own adapted solutions and instruments dedicated to a core group of clients. We’ve always tried to base our business on a balance between our consultants’ business experience, an excellent education from renowned business schools, their capacity for sharing knowledge and creating instruments, but most important, the ability to understand the business and problems of our clients. If you understand the real problem you can generate the appropriate solution.
We believe in long term relationships when it comes to providing assistance for implementing solutions (not necessarily volume projects) in the area of management development. In this process we would like to include a mix of approaches: workshops based on solving actual problems within the company, development and assessment centres, sessions based on individual development (small groups can also benefit from this), trainings that are based on an integrated, large-scale corporative development, consultancy - I for one strongly believe in highly adapted solutions based on the language of the client company.
On the other hand we’ve also started developing a new line of business, open courses that include a CNFPA certificate, which we hope will become self sustainable in the long run.
