Human Invest: What makes TLC unique and different from other leadership development solutions?
David Pilbeam: One of the key features of The Leadership Challenge Workshop is that it promotes leadership at all levels. It has been used in small and large organisations, profit and not for profit sectors. It has been used to develop individual leaders, leadership teams and as a strategic solution to mobilise broad based action within organisational change projects.
It has been conducted worldwide. Although the original research was conducted in America, it is a genuinely international model these days.
It has a massive evidence base and is relatively straightforward for people to understand and apply in the work setting.
Human Invest: Can you describe one o your most rewarding experiences in implementing TLC for a client?
David Pilbeam:
I recently worked on an organisational change project for a medium sized Financial Services Company, where TLC was used to drive change across the business. In moving towards professionalisation, the organisation had become over-reliant on systems and process, developing a reputation with employees, suppliers and customers for being bureaucratic and difficult to deal with. The new CEO began to work on rebalancing systems and human relations within the business, considering the key issue to be that the business was over-managed and under-led.
Creating a greater degree of ownership and autonomy within different departments and regions was seen as critical in order for the existing structures and systems to bring results and for business decisions to be made in a timely fashion. The Executive Team in particular needed to learn to trust people beyond this core group and recognise the strengths and skills of those in the wider business. Leadership needed to be seen as a practice rather than a position.
Following a series of Leadership Challenge Workshops that involved the top 150 managers in the business, a review was undertaken of the effectiveness of the programme. People reported significant changes in culture in the business which led to less staff turnover, a stronger desire in people for learning and development, more effective decision making and feedback, a greater sense of urgency and clarity about the future.
Human Invest: How do you think this can be useful for the Romanian managers?
David Pilbeam: The Leadership Challenge is about how leaders help others to want to get extraordinary things done. It's about how leaders transform values into actions, visions into realities, barriers into opportunities, people working in silo’s into high performing project players, and risks into rewards. Romanian managers, faced with growing level of complexity in their work, will benefit from the clarity of insight that this model offers and be moved to deliver significantly better results.
Human Invest: From your background as an entrepreneur, how does TLC support small to medium businesses?
David Pilbeam:
Of course, ultimately it is about the bottom line. In SME’s there is no hiding place. Managers are under increasing pressure to deliver. By focussing only on systems and processes manager’s risk losing the engagement of their people, and without this results will only go one way.
The research shows that people working with leaders who demonstrate The Five Practices are significantly more satisfied with the actions and strategies of their leaders, and they feel more committed, excited, energized, influential, and powerful. In other words, the more people engage in the practices of exemplary leaders, the more likely it is that they'll have a positive influence on others in the organisation regardless of size. |
