MY SPECIAL FEELING

Dear all,

Raluca Bunea
Raluca Bunea
Project Manager
of HFH
Reconstruction after Flooding Project
I would like to share with all of you my joy following my latest visit to the families we work with; many of them have been working day and night ever since we made the delivery of materials and are ahead of schedule with the aim to celebrate Christmas in a decent home.

I had a very special feeling when visiting a Roma neighborhood where the community warned us about how difficult it would be to achieve anything; and I am so proud to say that Roma prove them wrong!

You walk on to a street where over 20 families work side by side to repair their houses and bring them to a decent standard that they had never dreamed of. They will not have to suffer in damp houses anymore; they will have heating, dry walls, and new floors; no more rain or snow leaking through the roof, nor fear of damaged walls collapsing over them.

They are proud of their hard work and, covered in mud, sand and cement they pull us into their houses where they have been moving from one room to another as they finished pouring concrete floors; they show us the good work they've done and we are so glad to have such responsible partners.

The atmosphere out in the street where they mix concrete and inside the house where family members of all ages work side by side is amazing;

And I am grateful to every one of you and to my team here for making this happen.

Warm regards,

Raluca
FLOODING REPORT

Flood
"There are old and sick people who need help. The mud under the wooden floor, the mould and lack of heating affects their health. I think we ought to get involve in these people's life", declared Viorel Miron, the mayor of Comanesti.

Right after the disaster made by the Trotus River in the poor neighborhoods of Comanesti, Habitat for Humanity initiated an intervention plan designed to help the affected families rebuild their homes. During 1st of October 2005 31st of January 2006, 106 families from the poor areas of the town will be helped. So far, 28 families enjoy already the warmth of their rebuilt home.

The concrete floors and the plastering works for the remaining 78 houses were finished on 5th of December, so all these families will celebrate Christmas in their own house. The remaining of December and January is for interior painting and finishing works.

Habitat for Humanity Pitesti finished the first stage of intervention project in the flooded areas: 15 houses repaired in Golesti. The repair works consisted in consolidations, repairs of interior plastering, interior painting with washable paint, joinery painting, the floors were changed. The repair works were done by the construction staff of Habitat Pitesti together with the partner families. The second stage of the project is under way: building four new houses for the families who lost their homes. We also search if it is possible to intervene with construction materials in the area of Micesti village which was badly affected by the last 2005 flooding wave.

Habitat for Humanity Pitesti proposed to assist more than 80 families as part of its projects by July 2006. Thus, by 1st of July, in five years of activity, we will have helped 110 families benefit of simple, decent and healthy houses.

"Nobody helped us but Habitat. Everybody forgot about us. God was our last hope. And He brought Habitat to us", says Nitu Marin, 57 years old. Nitu Marin lived in a cardboard-made shelter and he will receive a clean and healthy house. "I couldn't believe that our life time work was gone in a second... water entered everywhere... it destroyed all the furniture, the walls are mouldy and I can't light the fire because the stoves are gone...", said Ion Craciun, the owner of a house which needed 40% reconstruction works.
